The tradition of building relationships with others by sitting at a meal with them is demonstrated by Abraham (Genesis 18). Not only does he entertain strangers (angels - Hebrews 13:1-2) he also draws closer to God.
Ancient Greek saying - "there is a thinning that occurs around a table" - This "thinning" is the reduction of the barriers between the physical and the spiritual, between the enemies and friends.
Matthew 9:9-13 - Jesus demonstrated how to best be "salt and light" in this world....he sat around a table with tax collectors (collaborators) and sinners. The Pharisees were apalled...they were the "seperated ones". Jesus extended friendship to men like Matthew and Zacheus so that a "thinning" could occur.
Today, as we gather around the table, let us consider the Lord's example and find someone to extend friendship to.
