At the beginning of "A Christmas Carol" the character of Ebeneezer Scrooge is introduced as a man whose heart has become so hardened that he is characterized by a complete indifference to the suffering of others. He holds all of humanity in disdain and exhibits that by not showing compassion for anyone; not for his family, not for his employee, not for the poor, nor for the lame.
After his transforming experience we see evidence of a changed heart by the way he shows compassion to others. Compassion is the heart of Jesus.
