When NOT to Pray

Continuation of thoughts from several weeks ago.

Joshua 7

Questions to Ask:

  1. Do I mask irresponsibility with prayer?
  2. Do I see irresponsibility and facilitate it?
  3. Am I reaping what someone else has sown?

Responsibility is a community thing....not a solo thing.

There is NO WIN in being tolerant of irresponsible behavior.

If God has addressed it in His word, then you don’t have to pray about it

You can’t PRAY your way out of something you have BEHAVED your way into.

Irresponsibility creates conflict within a person and within a community.

The Guest List by Don Campbell

A Crooked Family Tree (Matthew 1:3-6)
Matthew gives an odd historical account. History writers were paid to make the person who hired them look good. But Matthew goes out of his way to mention four women who would not be flatering to the Messiah. Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheeba were mentioned...3 out of the four weren't even Jewish.

I have not come for the (self) Righteous, but for the Sinners
Why? Because Matthew knew that the story of Jesus was all about the skeletons and sinners.
Matthew 9:1-12 - Matthew met Jesus when he(Matt) was considered one of the lowliest in the land. He was a Tax Collector which made him unclean to the "holy". Yet Jesus sought him out and ate with him.

Then Jesus gave perhaps the most important quote in the gospel. "I have come not for the righteous but for sinners".

The Christmas Story
God sent Jesus to draw to him those who had been drawn away.
We must change our mindset to fit this truth. Those who think they are righteous and those who know they are not are both in need of a savior.

Peace on Earth, Good will to Men

Whenever we retell the Christmas story, we come to the part about the message of the angels, and something doesn't seem right. Listen again to what they say, (Luke 2:14) At first hearing, it sounds like the promise is given for peace to come to earth because Jesus, the Messiah, is to be born. But any way you look at it, this does not appear to be the case - there has not been peace.

Were the Angels lying when they said, "Peace on Earth"? Where's the Peace? Is this a promise a blessing? "

Peace" (the Hebrew is "Shalom") a sacred blessing

Luke 10:5,6 - "When you enter a house, first say, `Peace to this house.' If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you.

"Is my house a place where "Sons and Daughters of Peace" reside?

Romans 8:6 - The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.

Romans 14:17-19 - Peace with God and Men through the Spirit

But Jesus had tried to make it clear to them - the kingdom of God is within, it is a rule of the heart.

The more shalom we bring to the world, the quicker will we attain completion and true, everlasting peace

Around the Table by Don Campbell

The tradition of building relationships with others by sitting at a meal with them is demonstrated by Abraham (Genesis 18). Not only does he entertain strangers (angels - Hebrews 13:1-2) he also draws closer to God.

Ancient Greek saying - "there is a thinning that occurs around a table" - This "thinning" is the reduction of the barriers between the physical and the spiritual, between the enemies and friends.
Matthew 9:9-13 - Jesus demonstrated how to best be "salt and light" in this world....he sat around a table with tax collectors (collaborators) and sinners. The Pharisees were apalled...they were the "seperated ones". Jesus extended friendship to men like Matthew and Zacheus so that a "thinning" could occur.

Today, as we gather around the table, let us consider the Lord's example and find someone to extend friendship to.

Am I a Thankful Person by Don Campbell

A thankful person is content
“whatever the circumstances”
A thankful person is grateful
“He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him”
A thankful person is merciful
“from the heart”

Content, grateful, merciful people are a reflection of Christ in this world.
