- Moses
- David
- Elijah
- Esther
- Daniel
- Paul, and all the remaining Apostles

Secular history also shows that great thinkers like, Confucius, Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Hippocrates all fasted.
- Twice a week fasts (Luke 18:12 - Pharisee states that "I fast twice a week")
- Problem? “Ritual” not “Reason”
- Not for show – it isn’t about looking Holy, it is about seeking holiness.
- This doesn’t mean we can’t have a Public fast
- Day of Atonement - Lev. 23:27
- National emergency - Joel 2:15, 2 Chron. 20:1-4, Jonah 3:5-9, Ezra 8:21-23
- Early church group fasts:
- Acts 13:2-3 – Church at Antioch, calling of Paul and Barnabas
- Acts 14:23 – Apostles, ordination of elders
Jesus wasn’t tempted because he was weak from fasting (not like us, James – drawn away and enticed) Jesus went willingly to do battle -Fasting was his preparation
I must bring my body into subjection….my Meat is to do the will of my father….man does not live by bread alone….
If the physical is not linked to the spiritual then it is a waste of time and effort.
Fasting for a Spiritual Breakthrough
- Small group – Ezra, Nehemiah, Daniel, Mark, Acts - Linking of the spiritual and physical through fasting and prayer.
- POWERFUL spiritual breakthroughs (Mark 9 – ONLY with prayer and fasting)
- Daniel - fasting, praying, confessing making requests to God’s holy hill….Gabriel appeared and said, “I have come to give you INSIGHT and UNDERSTANDING”!!
