God of the Possible by Don Campbell

We won't dream any bigger than what we think is possible.
Reality shrinks the "what's possible" down to "what's manageable"

(Photo of Colton in Rome)

The Colosseum in Rome was 144ft tall. It had 72 different "marked" entrances. Plus 4 more. 2 - VIP entrances, Gladiator Entrance, and the Emperor's entrance.

Construction was started in 72 A.D. by Vespasian and Completed in 80 A.D. by Titus

In the 1700's Pope Benedict the 7th Dedicated the Coliseum to the Christian Martyrs who died there.

With God, All Things Are Possible
Go back in time and tell the Christians in 85 A.D. that there would be a cross there and they would say, "That is Impossible"

God Calls things into Existence
God can do anything he likes. Do not fall into the same trap Satan did. He put God in a box. He underestimated what God can do.

When the Cheering Stopped by Don Campbell

How did we get from "Hosanna" to "Crucify" in four days?

Triumphal Entry
Not the first time. Judas and Theudus (mentioned by Gamaliel)

yasha'na = save us
  1. Heal me
  2. Feed me
  3. Destroy my enemies

God = the giant vending machine in the sky

If only...

  1. Did not recognize His purpose
It was Passover, same time as when God sent a destroyer of enemies.
Moses set them free on the Passover. Was Jesus the one they have been waiting for?
  2. Did not accept His terms
I want there to be a God as long as he gives me what I want, when I want it, on my terms.

Do I want to worship God or do I want to BE god?

Are we suffering from the Sin of Eve?

Moment with God by Don Campbell

"Earth's crammed with Heaven and every bush afire with God;
Only he who sees takes off his shoes,
the rest stand around picking blackberries."
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Aurora Leigh, Book VII, lines 812-826

Luke 16:27-31
"...picking blackberries"

Jesus often times said, "He who has an ear to hear, let him hear"
In this story of the rich man and Lazarus, Abraham says the brothers of the rich man
would not believe in God even if a dead man came back to life and told them.
- Those who see, take off their shoes
- Those who don't, go through life like "this" is all there is.

Acts 17:27
"...though he is not far from us"

God sets bushes afire in our lives for one reason....that we might seek Him.

Psalm 119:2
"Seek him with your Whole Heart"

The Blessing comes to those who seek him with their whole heart.
We have divided passions. We have divided loyalties.
We must take time to clear the mechanism. (For love of the Game)

Psalm 63:1-8
"Earnestly I Seek You"

Big Rocks by Don Campbell

“Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom”

Put my life in the context of the “Everlasting to Everlasting”

Rocks Illustration: The key to getting more done in life is NOT simply by adding MORE. The key is Prioritizing.

Priority Determines Capacity
What are the Big Rocks, the Non-negotiables in my life?

Matthew 6:33
Seek First

We live in a culture that does not value the “big stuff”

Truth: EVERYONE is seeking something FIRST

If you don’t know what your FIRST is…..ask someone who knows you.

OR ---LOOK at what you spend the MOST TIME and MONEY on.

First Things First
Urgent vs. Important. Don’t prioritize your schedule….schedule your priorities.

Time Keeps on Slippin' (Part 2 of 2) by Don Campbell

Prayer to Pray

Heavenly Father, Teach me to number my days that I might gain a heart of wisdom and fulfill your purpose for my life

Truths about Time

  1. There is a cumulative value to investing small amounts of time over a long period.

  2. Neglect is cumulative as well.

  3. There is no cumulative value in the random things we opt for over the important things.

  • Redeeming the Time = Cash in your time for something of equal value.

  • The Days are Evil = The natural flow of culture is evil.

  • Foolish = to be a person who knows what they ought to do but doesn’t do it.

  • God has a will for you.

  • Self-Control = Control yourself.

“Redeem the time because the days are evil.”

Time Keeps on Slippin' (Part 1 of 2) by Don Campbell

The question to as is not – “What time is it”...
...but rather – “What am I doing with my time”

“What time is it?” is a bad question because it reminds us that our time is running out.

"Happy Thoughts" from Job 7:6, 9:25

I need to begin living with the "End in Mind"

Psalm 90
Context is Everything

People who live for themselves
  1. Always run out of time

  2. History never speaks well of them

Moses’ point isn’t that “life doesn’t matter," his point is that your only hope for significance is to put yourself into the context of what God is doing.

Vs. 11 - If we could see God as He is, we would give Him the reverence that is due Him.

God’s glory is so powerful you would burn up if you laid eyes upon it.

John 18, Jesus let a little glory slip out.

If we could see more clearly we would live more purposefully

“Everlasting to Everlasting” is our context.

A Prayer to Pray
Heavenly Father, Teach me to number my days that I might gain a heart of wisdom and fulfill your purpose for my life.

Breakthrough by Don Campbell

The Bible reads like a who’s who when it comes to fasting:
  • Moses
  • David
  • Elijah
  • Esther
  • Daniel
  • Paul, and all the remaining Apostles
  • Jesus
Church history reveals that Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley all fasted.
Secular history also shows that great thinkers like, Confucius, Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Hippocrates all fasted.

“They will fast”
Mark 2:18-20
  • Twice a week fasts (Luke 18:12 - Pharisee states that "I fast twice a week")
  • Problem? “Ritual” not “Reason”

“When you fast…”
Matthew 6:16-18

The Fast of Jesus

Mathew 4

Jesus wasn’t tempted because he was weak from fasting (not like us, James – drawn away and enticed) Jesus went willingly to do battle -Fasting was his preparation

Training your Body
1 Corinthians 9:25

I must bring my body into subjection….my Meat is to do the will of my father….man does not live by bread alone….

True Fasting brings Change
Isaiah 58

If the physical is not linked to the spiritual then it is a waste of time and effort.

Fasting for a Spiritual Breakthrough
  • Small group – Ezra, Nehemiah, Daniel, Mark, Acts - Linking of the spiritual and physical through fasting and prayer.
  • POWERFUL spiritual breakthroughs (Mark 9 – ONLY with prayer and fasting)
  • Daniel - fasting, praying, confessing making requests to God’s holy hill….Gabriel appeared and said, “I have come to give you INSIGHT and UNDERSTANDING”!!

Kneeling for Healing by Don Campbell

Bowing, Kneeling, or Prostrate before the Lord

Bowing
  • Genesis 24:26 - "And the man bowed down his head, and worshiped the LORD."
  • Exodus 4:31 - "then they bowed their heads and worshiped."
  • Exodus 12:2 - "And the people bowed their head and worshiped."
  • Exodus 34:8 (ASV) - "And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped."
Kneeling
  • 1Kings 8:54 - "Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication unto the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven."
  • Ezra 9:5 - "I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God,"
  • Psalms 95:6 (ASV) - "O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker."
  • Isaiah 45:23 - "That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear."
  • Luke 22:41 - "And Jesus was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,"
  • Ephesians 3:14 (ASV) - "For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,"
On the face before God
  • Numbers 20:6 - "and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them."
  • Joshua 5:14 - "And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship"
  • 1Kings 18:42 - "And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,"
  • 2 Chronicles 20:18 - "And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with [his] face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshiping the LORD."
  • Matthew 26:39 - "Jesus went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed"
  • Revelation 7:11 - "fell before the throne on their faces, and worshiped God"

It’s a historical thing

Daniel’s prayer ritual was honored by God.

Daniel’s friends were recognized for their worship (or lack thereof) by their posture.

Outward display of an inward respect

It’s a humility thing
Luke 18:9-14

To some who were confident in their own righteousness…
Could not even look up… Humility comes before honor.

Overflow (Part 2) by Don Campbell

Matthew 12:33-37
Overflow of the heart – garbage in-garbage out

  • Note that slanderers were listed with homosexuals.
  • It’s funny how some Christian people consider homosexuality to be so perverse and anathema but we wouldn’t bat an eye before tearing someone down with our words.
Proverbs 6:16-19
The Abominable Seven
  • Of the seven, 3 are words we say. Lying tongue, false witness, man who stirs up dissention. Lumped right in with Wickedness and Murder!
Revelation 21:8 All liars…
  • People lie. Southerners are the worst at this….we are protective liars (to protect you from the truth) but we are really APPROVAL ADDICTS and we don’t want you to think bad about us or worse…talk bad about us so WE WON’T TELL YOU THE TRUTH!
“For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil, there is only one striking at the root”
~ Steven Covey

We all know we have a “word” problem, but all we do is to address a few of the peripheral issues and never strike at the root.

What is going on inside my heart to cause that to overflow?

Why do people slander? Gossip? Deceive? Tear down others with their words?

It is because HURTING people HURT people.

We tear others down to NUMB the PAIN of our own sin, our own weaknesses, our own mistakes.

After all….Misery loves company.

Overflow (Part 1) by Don Campbell

Matthew 12:33-37
out of the overflow, the mouth speaks.
Good in, good out.
Garbage in, garbage out.
  • Sowing and reaping (be not deceived…)
  • Words are powerful ....“No three words have greater power than, I love you”
More importantly, it’s a matter of the heart.

Proverbs 27:19
“as water reflects the face, so a man’s heart reflects the man”

So, if you call yourself good…..good must come from your heart…out of your mouth. Faith filled words. Encouraging words.

The Year of the Towel by Don Campbell

John 13:1-17
Jesus and the Towel

  • “He now showed them the full extent of His Love."

  • Imagine this story in a different way. Jesus got up and paid some servant girl to wash the apostles feet. Not the same effect. Peter would not have refused

  • it wasn’t the foot-washing that was uncommon….it was WHO did it.

Matthew 20:16
“The Last will be First”

  • How many will get up tomorrow and say, “I want to lose”?

  • Not in our national DNA

  • God is not anti-success, he is anti-selfishness

Proverbs 18:12
“Humility before Honor”

“The Year of the Towel"
Hunter Hills 2011

a year of serving others (not just inside but out outside these walls)

Don't be Fair by Don Campbell

Life’s not Fair….nor should it be

1 Tim. 5:8
family first (worse than an infidel)

Galatians 6:10
do good to all, especially those in the household of faith (family of believers)

Heaven’s not Fair
Matthew 6:1-6,16-18,20, 16:27, 20:13-16, 25:14-30
1 Cor. 3:8-15, 2 John 4:10, Rev. 22:12

Hell’s not Fair
Romans 2:5-6, 2 Peter 2:21, Rev. 20:11-15

God’s not Fair…nor do we want Him to be
Children of Israel were “preferred” by God
We don’t’ want fairness or justice from God….we want mercy

Don’t be Fair
Old saying, “if I do it for you I’d have to do it for everyone”

“Do for one what you wish you could do for all”
Go deep rather than wide
Go long rather than short
Go time more than money

I Don't Wanna be a Goat by Don Campbell

Mathew 25:31-46
Jesus in Street Clothes

Jesus sends a very clear message here….carrot and the stick….punishment and reward….blessings and curses.

We water down the message, discount it, and over look it…..why? Because we can’t get past “doing church” long enough to see the importance of “being the church”.

We say, “I’m a Christian, I go to church most every Sunday”.
Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car!

Luke 6:30
Give to everyone who asks…

Mark 10:17-31
Treasure and Trust
Where is your treasure? Where is your trust?

Vs. 23 – How hard it is for those who TRUST in riches to enter the kingdom of Heaven
Vs. 29-31 – Promise: 100 times as much in this present age…..and with them, persecution
We forget about the promises
Something the rich young ruler didn’t understand.
YOU WILL BE BLESSED!

But more importantly:
“Because of your Service…Men will Praise God”
2 Corinthians 9:12-13

When they close the book on the story of Hunter Hills in 2011, would that the Lord will say of us what he said of Thyatira:

“You are now doing more than you did at first”
Revelation 2:18-19
